Collection: Handcrafted Bamboo Skis

I’ve been making skis for about eight years under the Waist Deep brand; turning out 8 – 12 pair per year.  I’ve worked with dozens of woods, sidewalls, base styles and fibres; and over the past few years, I have focused exclusively on bamboo.

Bamboo has outstanding characteristics for ski making.  It is a long, flexible and light weight wood that has superb longitudinal and lateral strength, among the strongest woods in the world, and its stiffness is controllable.

As a ski maker, it allows me to make a ski for any skier.  I can create shallow ski profiles to make the ski softer (ideal for old guys and gals with bad hips or knees) or alternatively, keep the profiles thick to add rigidity.  Using various fibres such as Carbon, Fibreglass and Kevlar, in different weights, allows me to stiffen up the ski as much as desired.

In 2024 I developed the Carv66 and Cruz82, which are constructed as a medium-soft flex ski; ideal for intermediates – but made for guys like me – with bad hips and a little less mobility.    With moderate pressure these skis have proven to carve beautifully and ride effortlessly.

Canadian Ski Magazine (Sept 2025 – Buyers Guide 2026 All Mountain and Carving Skis) wrote this about the Cruz82:

…The predominantly bamboo construction is about as sustainable it gets, while retaining important ski attributes, including a light weight and a smooth flex. Its slalom-esque turning radius translates into easy turning.

"Very responsive carving," said [ski tester] Mark Lassan.

True to its name, the ski felt most at home on soft-packed snow and at moderate speeds….

In the summer of 2025 I built, the Carv69 which provides a medium-hard flex with a nice ‘kicker’ at the back end of the ski; providing a little more acceleration coming out of the turn.  The Carv69 is significantly stiffer than the Carv66 and is currently in stock.

I also developed the Cruz86 which is ‘big front’ ski that tracks fast on piste; and floats in the pow.  This is a stiff, super charged ski, combining Carbon fibre on a sintered graphite base.  It is sure to be a speed demon that will be comfortable in all situations. This ski is currently in stock.

I am always interested in crafting new designs of skis.  If you are interested in having a pair of skis made to your specification, please feel free to reach out to me and we can discuss the process.  Please send a note here

Finally
It is a purposeful choice to use eco-friendly materials wherever possible and to have eliminated plastic sidewalls, plastic tip and tail fill, plastic top sheets, colour dyes, chemicals, and the resultant waste; in order to reduce our production ‘SnowPrint’.
